Project Description:
This home didn't require any big Architectural changes to transform it's appearance. To simplify the exterior, we replaced the existing mis-matched windows with modern glazing (no mullions!), re-sided a portion of the front elevation, and repainted the whole house. To complement the exterior, we painted the interior all white. We also sanded and re-finished the wood floors, created a more sculptural staircase, replaced all of the kitchen cabinets and re-designed the master bathroom.

Project Description:
This was a fun little project! Our clients recently exchanged the suburban life filled with home and lawn maintenance for a life living in a downtown Kansas City condominium.
Wanting to put their touch on an already nearly perfect space, they contacted Studio Build to design a home theater and fireplace.
The fireplace is constructed of horizontal white oak slats burnt in the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban. The burnt surface provides a unique color and texture to the wood. New electronically controlled shades complete the living room, providing access to the downtown skyline at the flip of a switch.
Several walls were removed. New sound proof walls and floor were constructed. The design utilizes vertical slats in the construction of the built-in units. This was to allow for substantial air flow around the many audio visual components. Doors cover, yet provide full access to pull-out equipment racks for easy installation and adjustment. The orange speaker material serves a dual purpose. It is a lively pop of color in a dark grey space, yet the material allows sound to penetrate and decay in the base traps built into the unit.

Located in Kansas City's Westside neighborhood, the 715 Condo recently got a full facelift. The overall layout of the space is nearly identical but by removing the pantry / room divider in the kitchen, the main level was completely transformed into a open, modern & more functional space. The range location was swapped with the sink so that the vent hood would no longer obstruct the space over the island. We also designed and fabricated a new dining table as an extension of the island. The old bamboo floor was replaced with more traditional oak which was then stained dark to contrast with the walls. We were able to re-design the master bathroom to utilize the excessive space. The new nook has a custom quilt storage cabinet to store some the fantastic modern quilts that this homeowner has constructed. All of the casework (kitchen, master bathroom & quilt storage) was designed and fabricated at Studio Build. If you want to check out some of the homeowner's quilts, click here.

This Leawood Kansas residence was transformed by converting the existing patio into dining space. That design decision allowed the kitchen to be configured in a modern and efficient manner. The dark stain on the rift-sawn white oak cabinets provides a nice contrast to the white interior. All of the casework was fabricated and installed by Studio Build's team of talented craftsmen.

This house is located in a southern Johnson county suburban neighborhood. This basement was completely transformed from a traditional mother-in-law suite into a modern entertainment area. Studio Build re-designed the basement layout as well as designed, fabricated and installed all of the custom cabinetry at our studio in the crossroad district of downtown Kansas City. The black stainless appliances and modern brass accents look fantastic with the cabinets which are rift sawn white oak, stained black with a clear conversion varnish top coat. All of the interior cabinet shelves are rift sawn white oak with a clear finish. They are not stained black and provide a nice contrast against the black stained exterior.

Drummond 7835 was in need of a bit of a modern revival to fit the open nature of the house. The configuration is relatively the same. We removed the wall separating the kitchen from the living room allowing the homeowner to take advantage of the wonderful light and visual connection to the back yard. The casework was fabricated at our studio here in Kansas City and is constructed of walnut veneered plywood accented with lime and blue fronts. The utility room was further defined by adding a which also allowed the new kitchen to gain some full height pantry storage.

Studio Build added some flair by designing and building the vanity, mirror, shower ceiling and shower base. The stainless steel shelf in the shower was also designed by Studio Build. LED lighting was integrated into the shower ceiling to accent the glass tile.

Many of the homes in this historic Kansas City neighborhood have been hap-hazardly added onto throughout the years. This particular couple have done a great job adapting their home to fit their modern lifestyle. The floor plan was tweaked and the kitchen was rotated to make their living / dining experience more efficient and enjoyable. A couple of our favorite features in this new kitchen are the full height white subway tile backsplash, mahogany shelves (with concealed fasteners) and the custom mahogany + blackened steel movable island (both were fabricated by Studio Build).

As many of you may know, Studio Build is quite fond of the mid-century Drummond's around Kansas City. Jerad's first house, Drummond 7342, was the catalyst for Studio Build. 7348 has been the next step in our evolution. Most of the casework was fabricated and pre-finished in our shop, some of it was fabricated on site. The most unique aspect of this Drummond is the basement that was added during this renovation. 20' was added to the length of the house, transforming it from a small 2 bedroom 1 bath into a comfortable 4 bedroom 3 bath home.

Studio Build was approached with the task of updating the kitchen in this original 1950's post and beam modern home located in South Kansas City. The original house was designed by local Architect David Runnells and advertised as the All Climate House in the May 1950 issue of House Beautiful Magazine.
A relatively small addition (120 square feet) enabled the house and existing garage to be connected and the entry to be moved to the front of the house, while allowing the floor plan to be open for a much larger kitchen. Matching the existing construction techniques helps the addition seamlessly blend into the existing home. Studio Build was fortunate to be able to design + fabricate all of the custom casework which is a walnut plywood with white & grey accents.
