At this private office, we were asked to create a hidden oasis meant to entertain friends and clients. The result was one of our favorite challenge's to date. The bio-metric thumbprint lock releases a section of of the custom baltic birch plywood bookshelf to reveal a private "speakeasy". We must say, this was an awesome idea and we can't wait to do it again!

This was a fun little project! Our clients recently exchanged the suburban life filled with home and lawn maintenance for a life living in a downtown Kansas City condominium.
Wanting to put their touch on an already nearly perfect space, they contacted Studio Build to design a home theater and fireplace.
The fireplace is constructed of horizontal white oak slats burnt in the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban. The burnt surface provides a unique color and texture to the wood. New electronically controlled shades complete the living room, providing access to the downtown skyline at the flip of a switch.
Several walls were removed. New sound proof walls and floor were constructed. The design utilizes vertical slats in the construction of the built-in units. This was to allow for substantial air flow around the many audio visual components. Doors cover, yet provide full access to pull-out equipment racks for easy installation and adjustment. The orange speaker material serves a dual purpose. It is a lively pop of color in a dark grey space, yet the material allows sound to penetrate and decay in the base traps built into the unit.
"A design store in Kansas City for people who want well-designed objects for everyday life."
A friend and colleague designed these minimalist cubes for one of their clients. Studio Build's fabrication team did a great job of collaborating with the designer and owner to ensure the finished product met everyone's expectations. These maple plywood boxes are maneuverable, and provide a variety of display options.

Hugo Tea asked us to come up with a booth to use at the various trade shows that they attend across the nation annually. Our team of designers and fabricators created a solution that is lightweight and easy to assemble while also reflecting the Hugo Tea brand. The custom fabricated aluminum frame supports the teak Formica panels and allows the entire set up to be broken down into flat pack boxes that can be shipped to the Tradeshow location. The vertical steel panels were etched with a pattern to provide a nice contrast in materials while also providing a nice canvas for some subtle branding.
If you haven't discovered this new shop, you need to! Studio Build helped Bizz & Weezy with their window graphics, point of sale and accent wall design. Wood tiles have intrigued us for quite some time, we couldn't be happier with the way they turned out. Stop by and grab some coffee & chocolate, Bizz & Weezy is located on the corner of 18th and Baltimore here in Kansas City.

Studio Build was commissioned by a client of Jerad's previous employer (RDM Architecture). We were simply asked to provide a "high quality" Entertainment Center. After a few design sessions and a few weeks in our furniture fabrication shop, the Suscito Media Center was born. This finely crafted, solid cherry and wenge piece has inset doors, dovetailed drawers and was finished with a low voc water based finish.

This client came to Studio Build looking for a sleek, simple, modern dining table that would compliment their current decor and simple modern dining chairs. After locating the Ash slabs, we experimented with the black finish by diluting black India Ink with water, a technique Studio Build has used on past projects. The bench was constructed in the same manner, both have a dovetail like connection where the base attaches to the slabs.

In our constant quest to think of witty names for Studio Build's custom furniture, we often turn to experiences from our past. During our architectural studies at Kansas State University, Jerad and Nate studied abroad in Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy. Along the way they visited the Siena Cathedral. The horizontal stripes of the drawer fronts triggered the memory of the black & white banding on the facade. Black & White are the symbolic colors of Siena. There are a few more colors in these pieces but it’s safe to say that Walnut is symbolic of Studio Build. This client started their Studio Build furniture collection with the Walnut Platform Bed, the Sienna Line (two nightstands, two dressers) completed their bedroom set.
The Walnut shells were accented with cherry, maple and ash hardwood drawer fronts along with white hardwood drawer pulls.

This Walnut and powder-coated steel coffee table is another Studio Build one of a kind piece completed for a Studio Build team member. The Walnut was a gift from the in-laws' and with the help of a couple other "Ryan's" the finished product couldn't have turned out nicer. A special thanks goes to Ryan Rieder (for the welding) and Ryan Thimesh (for the powder-coating).

tudio Build had been contemplating rehabbing a small vintage Airstream trailer to use as a job site office or a weekend camper. However, everyone got their fix while re-designing + re-building this 1961, 30' Airstream Sovereign. It was in fair condition when we took possession of it but we're pretty proud with how the finished result turned out. Complete with reclaimed barn wood, dedicated circuits for hair and makeup equipment, automatic skylights that open to help control the temperature and a mini bar of course, this new take on a Bridal Suite should be a hit.
Fresh Air Farm is a unique "professionally managed seasonal site" with amazing decor. Be sure to check them out if you're looking for a place to host your next corporate event or wedding.

Whiskey Design did a fantastic job re-branding Fresh Air Farm's graphics so when they contacted Studio Build about fabricating a new sign we jumped at the opportunity.
The CNC work on the 6' long by 3' wide solid white oak slab was done by 3-Axis here in Kansas City. The letters were routed out of MDO and doweled into the hardwood slab. Fresh Air Farm's new hand painted sign was a first for Studio Build, but the result turned out to be anything but ordinary.
It was our intention to use reclaimed wood from one of the Fresh Air Farm barns but Studio Build is also completed another project for Fresh Air Farm. You can check it out here.

This Studio Build design was one of our earliest. A queen size platform bed was crafted out of curly solid cherry, black walnut maple. Maple was sandwiched between the cherry to provide an accent band around the entire frame. The figure in this wood was incredible especially after the 8 coats of hand wiped oil.

Platform bed have been the craze for a few years now, this is Studio Build's take on it. If given a choice we always choose walnut. This king size platform bed was constructed completely out of solid black walnut hardwood. This bed has been built for two different clients and it speaks to how universal the simplicity of the design can be.

The Walnut “Beverage” Station was commissioned by a couple that enjoy entertaining people at their River Market condo in downtown Kansas City. They requested enough space to accommodate 40-50 liquor bottles along with 3 cases of wine. We exceeded that request, you can never have enough storage when it comes to booze. When we showed up for happy hour (and to photograph), our client promptly informed us that “the bottles were loosely spaced and they could easily fit a half dozen more bottles.” The wine cabinet also allows for bottles to be doubled up so they can stash the good stuff. The cabinet is constructed out of Walnut veneered plywood, has steel divider shelves and a granite top.

At Studio Build we are constantly searching for the balance between function and efficiency without compromising design. These desk prototypes are a result of that search. We have been experimenting with different color tints that can be sprayed through our air-assisted airless finish system, so the color of the writing surfaces is completely customizable to compliment any color scheme. Here are a couple variations that we came up with.
Version one has Solid walnut legs with a white tinted lacquer writing surface and Studio Build's signature baby blue steel support across the bottom of the legs. Solid white oak legs were used on version two with a black tinted writing surface and black steel support.

Here's another table prototype that we've been working on. The base is oiled raw steel and was fabricated by Nathan Shay with Sculpturehaus. The white oak wood top extends from 6 feet to 9 feet by inserting two drop-leafs. The finish is an extremely durable low VOC conversion varnish.
We have some tricks up our sleeve and are looking forward to showing off our outdoor aluminum / concrete version. Stay tuned for Studio Build's outdoor line coming spring '13.

The wood really set the tone for the design of this desk. 2″ thick and 6′ long with some amazing color and figure. We had some thoughts for the design but ended up turning our summer intern, Chris Penland, a Kansas State University Architecture student, loose on the design of the base. Chris invested the majority of the time and energy that it took to plane the slab down to a flat surface. While he was planing it down we came a cross a bullet that was lodged in the trunk, we jokingly wondered if it was from a Civil War battle which became the inspiration for the photoshoot. Hand cut Curly Maple Butterflies were inserted to help resist the larger cracks that were forming. All other cracks, knot holes, etc were filled with molten Bismuth to resemble the Lead Bullet that was removed.
