Project Description:
This was a fun little project! Our clients recently exchanged the suburban life filled with home and lawn maintenance for a life living in a downtown Kansas City condominium.
Wanting to put their touch on an already nearly perfect space, they contacted Studio Build to design a home theater and fireplace.
The fireplace is constructed of horizontal white oak slats burnt in the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban. The burnt surface provides a unique color and texture to the wood. New electronically controlled shades complete the living room, providing access to the downtown skyline at the flip of a switch.
Several walls were removed. New sound proof walls and floor were constructed. The design utilizes vertical slats in the construction of the built-in units. This was to allow for substantial air flow around the many audio visual components. Doors cover, yet provide full access to pull-out equipment racks for easy installation and adjustment. The orange speaker material serves a dual purpose. It is a lively pop of color in a dark grey space, yet the material allows sound to penetrate and decay in the base traps built into the unit.
