Tony Fadell helped design the iPod and ran Apple's iPod and iPhone division until he chose a different career path. I would say he learned a thing or two while working with one of the world's best gadget guru's, Steve Jobs.
The Nest thermostat literally learns the behavior of it's occupants and ultimately saves them money by using drastically less energy throughout the day.
